Airborne pollutants are a bane to people doing their jobs at the workplace. Workplace pollution has become a nagging problem for employers and employees alike. Workers can get exposed to hazardous materials through inhaling polluted air or accidental intake of toxic materials and fumes. Exposure to harmful substances at the workplace is the leading cause of major pulmonary and cardiac problems. Therefore, safety and respiratory masks are necessary to ensure the longevity and better health of workers.

Masks come with the following respiratory rating:

• N- stands for non-oil resistant
• R- stands for oil -resistant
• P- stands for oil-proof

Types of Mask Safety

1. DisposAble Mask:

Disposable dust masks are ergonomically shaped masks meant for low-risk hazards. They protect against silica, brick dust, and fine particulate matter. Disposable masks should not be worn for more than eight hours.

Face masks are used to cover full face except for the eyes and forehead. They can be worn for a longer duration, and the filters can be changed at appropriate times to keep them fresh.

3. Dust Mask:

Dust masks, as the name suggests, offer protection against dust and pollen but are ineffective against poisonous chemicals and vapors.

4. Combination Respirator:

They ensure protection against gases, vapors, and solid particulate matter. They are apt for use by workers in oil-paint spray industries. These respirators significantly mitigate exposure to dust from fiberglass installation

5. Gas and Vapour Respirator:

These respirators are meant for protection against harmful gases and vapors. They cannot segregate harmful airborne particles

6. Latex Paint and Odor Mask:

These comfortable, lightweight masks prevent exposure to paint odors, pungent smells from latex and pollen. Workers involved in sanding, drywall sanding, installation of fiberglass insulation and rust removal use them.

7. Sanding and FiberGlass Respirator:

They are the preferred choice of workers who carry out sanding exercise for particleboard and drywall. These lightweight respirators filter out dust and debris during sanding and installation of fiberglass insulation.

Respiratory Protection Accessories

Inhalation valves, head harnesses, inhalation port gasket, airflow adjustment cover, twin cartridge adapter, filter retainer and pre-filter adapter are some of the widely used respiratory accessories.

Filter and Cartridges:

Filters are attached to the masks and generally used in pairs. They are disposed of when they are worn out. Filters and cartridges are used together in full face or half-face respirators. Filters with orange colour protect against mist, dust, and fumes. Black coloured filters prevent organic vapors. Yellow coloured filters safeguard against acidic gases and vapour. For microns as small as 0.3 microns in size, high efficiency filters can be used. Most of the cartridges have a dual - cartridge mechanism with one cartridge on each side of the mask.

Safety Tips

1. Keep Track of Smell:

If you feel irritation in the throat, nose, and smell something unusual, it is advisable to change the filter.

2. Ease of Breathing:

You should replace your respirator/mask, if you are not comfortable breathing or you feel the respirator/mask is choked.

3. Stay Dry:

Most of the respirators and disposable masks become ineffective when they get wet. Avoid contact with water for the better use of masks.

4. Follow Manufacturer's Instructions:

Follow manufacturer's instructions diligently and replace filters as instructed on the packaging

5. Say No to Re-Use:

Do not use disposable respirators more than once.

6. Discard, if broken:

You should get rid of any respirator/mask if its filter is damaged, dirty or broken. Gas masks should be replaced if the rubber seals are damaged.

How to choose the right respiratory protective wear for your workplace?

1. Be aware of the type of hazards and their impact on your workplace:

You can make an informed decision on choosing the right respiratory protection for your workforce only when you have a fair understanding of hazards affecting the work environment. For protection against the particulate and gas hazard, opt for masks with a combination of filter and cartridges which can block harmful vapors and substances.
If your workers are exposed to dust, mists or fumes, then you can choose particulate respirators with filters or pre-filters. For jobs involving substances which irritate eyes and skin, full-face or half-face masks with appropriate cartridges are recommended.

2. Select the respirator type:

Your choice of respiratory type should take into account compatibility with other protective equipment like safety goggles, helmets, and hard hats. For example, in a scenario where glass and half-face respirators are to be used together, the fitting can become an issue because of lack of alignment and space. Therefore, it is essential to find the equipment that fits perfectly well without leaving any room for leakage around respirator edges so that no part of the face is left unprotected.
