Grinders are the most frequently used tools in the power tools segment. Be it a small home improvement project or routine DIY (Do It Yourself) task; grinders are necessary tools for jobs of all hues.

Cordless and Electric Grinders

Based on the power supply, grinders are broadly classified into Cordless and Electric Grinders. Electric grinders work on AC power supply whereas Cordless grinders are expensive and use DC power supply. Both electric and cordless grinders are suitable for grinding, polishing and sanding applications. Cordless grinders offer portability, better ergonomics and ease of manoeuvring as compared to electric grinders which are connected to a power supply point. If you are working away from a power source and the task at hand does not require heavy power, you can opt for cordless grinders.

Type of Grinders

Grinders can be used for a variety of purposes from cutting and scraping, to smoothening out rough surfaces and much more. Angle, Bench and Die/Straight grinders are the most commonly used grinders.

1. Angle Grinders

Angle grinders are often referred as side grinders or disc grinders. These are handheld devices used mainly for grinding and polishing. Angle grinders derive power from an electric motor which propels a geared head at a right angle on which an abrasive disc is mounted. The size of the abrasive disc varies from 4 inches to 9 inches depending upon the power the grinder is required to generate. Angle Grinders with 4 inches and 5 inches generate higher RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) and less power. They are mostly used in less power intensive jobs. For more power, grinders with bigger disc sizes of 7 inches and 9 inches fit the bill. Such discs generate more power and are used for heavy metal and fabrication purposes. Dewalt DW801, Bosch 6-100, and Hitachi PD100 are the fastest selling angle grinders.

2. Bench Grinders:

Bench Grinders are mounted on a workbench and have rotating abrasive wheels. It is used for sharpening cutting tools like tool bits, drill bits, and chisels. It can also be used to fashion metal pieces before welding or fitting. The abrasive wheels have an RPM threshold which should not be breached. Over speeding of grinding wheel should be avoided because it might lead to explosions and accidents. Makita GB602, Ferm BGM 1020, Stanley STGB3715 and Metabo DS150 are some of the popular bench grinders.

3. Die Grinders:

Die grinders are the most preferred handheld power tools for grinding, honing and polishing materials such as metal and plastic. They also come in flexible shaft drive forms. Cordless battery powered electric die grinders are used mainly for lighter tasks. Makita GD0602, Maktec MT910, Dewalt DWE4887N, Hitachi GP2S2 are the most bought die grinders.

Grinding Accessories

You can enhance the utility of grinders with the help of accessories. Some of the frequently used accessories are as follows:

a) Cutting, Grinding and Diamond Blades

b) Backing Pads

c) Flap and Sanding Discs

d) Carbide Multi Cutting Discs

Safety First

a) Wear the protective gear, safety goggles, and hand gloves while operating grinders. Hand gloves ensure better hold of the tool and protect your hands from heat and sparks.

b) Grinders should be operated at an angle of 15 to 30 degrees. It significantly reduces the risk of powerful kick back.

c) Identify the right grinder for the job and follow manufacturer's instructions diligently. Avoid using a more powerful grinder than what is necessary for the job.

Things to keep in mind while buying grinders

Grinders Buying Guide

A) Ergonomics:

Ergonomics is the most important factor in narrowing down on the tool of your choice. No matter how efficient a tool is, if it is not comfortable to hold, it is not worth buying. Heavy tools require better ergonomics to ensure efficiency and minimize health hazards.

B) Motor Type

Grinders are powered by motors which are of types- Brushed (with carbon brushes) and Brushless (without carbon brushes). Grinders with brushless motors are efficient and dissipate less heat as compared to motors with carbon brushes. Efficiency does come at a cost, and this explains the high price of grinders with brushless motors.

C) Insulation:

One should check for insulation used in the grinders. Double insulation provides better protection against shocks. It is advisable to choose grinders with double insulation over single insulation ones.

d) Vibration:

load vibration levels are an indicator of the stability and safety of power tools. Tools with lower no-load vibration are safer.

e) Power to weight ratio :

Tools with a higher power to weight ratio are ideal for heavy-duty projects. If you are looking for grinders with lighter power intensity, check out the power to weight ratio for making an informed choice.

f) Switch Type:

The location and type of switch used to turn on the power hold significance in the smooth handling of grinders. Paddle switches are usually preferred over push switches.
